CHOPIN – HIS LIFE AND HIS MUSIC
For Chopin lovers this is a must. There is no recording in the world to compare with this. It is totally unique. Chopin’s moving life story which is beautifully narrated by Graham Roberts is an authentic account from the composer’s diaries and the writings of George Sand. Add to this some of Chopin’s finest and most popular music and the result is stunning. Included are two Polonaises, the Raindrop Prelude, So Deep is the Night, Ballade in G minor, Barcarolle, and Scherzo no. 3.
By programming the CD player, it is easy to listen to the music only if that is preferred.
BRAHMS OPUS 76, AND SCHUBERT SONATA IN B flat
Brahms was Vincent’s favourite composer, and the Klavierstücke opus 76 consist of eight gems of the highest quality. The composer is renowned for his depth of feeling in all his music, from the great symphonies and concertos, to the wonderful choral and chamber music. These piano pieces reflect an intimacy and soul that grows more precious the more they are listened to.
Schubert’s sublime and final Sonata in B flat was composed in a week, and was the third one written in the space of three weeks. During the fourth week he composed the great String Quintet in C.
That Schubert was in a fit state to compose these masterworks is miraculous in itself, for he was 31 years old and incurably sick, but instead of wallowing in his sickness, with only weeks to live he created these superb works especially for us. There was no hope of them ever being performed during his lifetime, as he was totally overshadowed by the success and reputation of Beethoven. They were near neighbours in Vienna, But much of Schubert’s music remained in manuscript until after his death. The Sonata in B flat is quite easy to listen to, but like the Brahms, will grow and grow the more it is listened to.
